Ball mill and grinding mill applications demand high starting torque and controlled acceleration on very large inertia, which is what a variable frequency drive (VFD) is sized for. Anti-stall logic prevents the mill from locking during overload, and a flying-start function re-captures a coasting mill without current spikes. How to Select the Right Ball Mill

  1. Check the motor nameplate: rated power, current, voltage and frequency.
  2. Identify the load type — variable torque (fans, pumps) or constant torque (conveyors, compressors, mills).
  3. Match the drive's rated output current to the motor's full-load current, not just the kW rating.
  4. Confirm the overload requirement: 120% for light duty, 150% or more for heavy duty.
  5. Check the environment: ambient temperature, dust, humidity and cable length derating.
