News & Technical Notes
Published: 2026-08-18How to Size a VFD for Centrifugal Pumps (Step-by-Step)Pump affinity laws, the correct current margin, and a commissioning checklist — a practical guide to sizing a variable frequency drive for centrifugal pumps so you avoid oversizing the drive or tripping on start.
Published: 2026-08-05VFD Harmonics and THD: What They Are and How to Reduce ThemVariable frequency drives are non-linear loads: they draw current in pulses and send harmonics back into the supply. This note explains which THD figure actually matters, where it must be measured, and how DC reactors, line reactors and 12-pulse rectifiers differ in cost and effect.
Published: 2026-07-16Motor Cable Length and VFDs: When You Need a dv/dt or Sine FilterLong cable runs between a drive and its motor create reflected-wave overvoltages that attack winding insulation. Cable length, switching frequency and motor insulation class together decide whether you need a dv/dt filter, a sine filter — or nothing at all.
Published: 2026-07-02VFD vs Soft Starter: When to Choose EachA plain-language comparison of variable frequency drives and soft starters: where each pays off, first-cost vs lifetime energy, and the three questions that decide the right choice for your motor.
Published: 2026-06-24Regenerative Braking: Brake Resistor or Regenerative Front End?When a motor brakes a high-inertia load it pushes energy back into the DC bus. A brake resistor burns that energy as heat; a regenerative front end returns it to the grid. The right answer depends on duty cycle, panel heat and whether you pay for the energy twice.
Project Cases
Project location: Zhangjiagang, Suzhou, ChinaCooling Water Pump Retrofit with a Permanent-Magnet Motor in ZhangjiagangA cooling water pump driving an industrial chiller was converted to a 75 kW permanent-magnet motor on a 150 A YZJ580E drive, with local/remote control from the panel door and run and fault signals back to the plant PLC.
Project location: Linyi, Shandong, ChinaVibro-Compacting Press for Engineered Quartz Slabs: Drive Selection for a High-Inertia ShakerQuartz slab presses compact a resin-and-quartz mix with 28–51 Hz vibration under vacuum. The vibration motor has a heavy eccentric load, so drive selection follows starting inertia, not just the 110 kW nameplate.
Project location: Fuzhou, Fujian, ChinaMushroom Substrate Bagging Machine: Sizing a Drive for Hard Accel and DecelA substrate bagger weighs out each bag by counting turns of an auger. The motor reverses constantly and has to accelerate in 0.30 s and stop in 0.10 s, so the 7.5 kW motor is paired with a 25 A drive.
Project location: Shaoxing, Zhejiang, ChinaCommissioning a Linear Motor Pumping Unit: Replacing the Beam Pump's Gearbox and CrankThe beam pumping unit is famous for wasting energy in its gearbox and for regenerating on the downstroke. A 37 kW linear motor driven by a YDS8045 removes both problems — and had to be commissioned over a 1,500 m cable.
Project location: Yixing, Jiangsu, ChinaCampus Air-Conditioning Circulating Pump Drive in Yixing: Selection and CommissioningA 45 kW chilled-water circulating pump on a university campus runs on a YD580T4-37G/45P-T with terminal start, analogue frequency reference and separate run and alarm relays. Measured current: 68 A balanced.
