How to Size a VFD for Centrifugal Pumps (Step-by-Step)

Centrifugal pump performance follows the affinity laws: flow scales with speed, head with the square of speed, and shaft power with the cube. Dropping pump speed by 20% cuts absorbed power by roughly 49%. This cubic relationship is why variable frequency drive (VFD) control saves the most energy where the pump runs well below its rated duty for long periods.

Size the drive by motor nameplate current, not only by power. A 7.5 kW pump motor at 400 V may draw 15.5 A, while a 5.5 kW motor of another design draws 12.8 A. Always read the full-load amps and add a 10–15% continuous margin for harmonic heating and future uprating; a drive rated at 100% means zero headroom.

Most pumps are variable-torque loads, so a standard 120% / 60 s overload rating is sufficient for steady running. The real risk is the closed valve start: an oversized drive that ramps too fast can water-hammer the pipework. Use a slow S-curve acceleration of 5–15 s and a PID constant-pressure loop to avoid pressure spikes at low flow.

Three frequent errors cause most field failures: (1) selecting the drive from power alone and under-sizing current; (2) omitting the input line reactor, which shortens diode life on weak grids; (3) ignoring the cable length derating for long runs to the motor. Build your inquiry around nameplate amps, supply quality, and cable distance, not just kilowatts.

Before first energization, confirm the motor rated voltage and frequency match the drive, set the PID sensor type, and test the dry-run and low-pressure alarms.
